Abstract

[Also in Group XL (c)] A microwave receiving head comprises a closed waveguide loop 7 having a mean perimeter equal to 6n quarter wave lengths, where n is an odd integer and a plurality of waveguide sections, one section 4 coupling a source of beating oscillations to said loop at a given point thereon two other sections 3, 5 coupling separately two halves of a balanced detector 33, 40 (Fig. 7), to said loop at points spaced n quarter wave lengths on either side of the first point and two further sections 2, 6 coupling two halves of a dipole aerial to the loop at points spaced 2n quarter wave lengths to either side of the first point. With this arrangement it may be ensured that none of the local oscillation energy reaches the aerial or appears in the output of the detector and in addition the local oscillator noise is balanced out. A short-circuited quarter waveguide 1 located opposite the local oscillator input point provides a D.C. path for the rectifier and a tuning adjustment, though this guide may be omitted if the arms 3 and 5 are extended an odd number of quarter wavelengths and shorted. The waveguide system is of strip line form and comprises an insulating sheet with strips printed on one side and a ground plane or interconnected strips on the other. Alternatively, the guides may be formed by printing strips on an insulating sheet spaced by an air gap from two ground planes in sandwich form. The widths of the strips are chosen to provide impedance matching between the branches of the loop and the strips 2 and 6 may be tapered to provide impedance matchings to the aerial. The guide 1 may be located on a separate sheet below the main sheet (Fig. 6, not shown), or may be printed on the main sheet (Fig. 3, not shown). Specifications 708,589 and 770,166 are referred to.
