Abstract

765,005. Machine-tool details. SCHNETZER, E., LINNEMANN, G., and SCHNETZER, T., [trading as LINNEMANN - SCHNETZER KOMM.-GES.]. Feb. 8, 1955 [Feb. 11, 1954], No. 3701/55. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] Apparatus for adjusting an element 2, e.g. a machine - tool carriage, a microscope, &c., having a tubular part 4, comprises fine threads in the part 4 engaging a spindle 6 and coarse threads 4a engaging a nut 8 which is constrained against axial displacement relatively to the spindle but can be freed for rotation relatively thereto, the threads 4a being of a sufficiently coarse pitch to turn the part 4 upon axial pressure being applied to the nut. For fine linear or angular adjustments of a tool or microscope slide operated by the lead-screw 2, the apparatus is set to reduce the drive-ratio between a hand wheel 7 and the screw 2 approximately in the ratio of the pitch of the fine threads on the spindle 6 and the coarse threads on part 4. Rotation of the wheel 7 screws the spindle 6 out of part 4 and displaces the nut 8 which is constrained to move with the spindle by a housing 8a, 8b attached to the nut and surrounding a flange 6b on the spindle. Displacement of the nut 8, which is splined at 12 to a tubular carrier 11 releasably clamped by spring-pressed rods 18, Fig. 4, to a casing 16, rotates the part 4 which is connected to the screw 2. The latter may be rotated by the wheel 7 without a reduction ratio by turning a screw 20 having a conical end to separate the clamping-rods 18, thus freeing the carrier 11 in the housing 16, and clamping the spindle 6 to the nut 8 by withdrawing a screw 21 having a conical tip which allows pins 22, Fig. 3, in the flange 6b of the spindle to move out of the path of spring-pressed rods 23, and the latter to clamp the flange 6b to the housing 8a, 8b. Scales indicating coarse and fine adjustments are provided on rings 14, 13 adjustable on an extension 11a of the carrier 11, the index for the ring 13 being on a ring 9 adjustable on the spindle 6. In an alternative arrangement for changing the drive ratio, a toothed sleeve 24<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, meshes with teeth on the carrier 11<SP>1</SP> and with teeth 25<SP>1</SP> on the spindle 6<SP>1</SP> for a reductionless drive, or with teeth 17<SP>1</SP> on the casing 16<SP>1</SP> for a reduction drive. Clamping screws or eccentrics may also be used for changing the drive ratio to a microscope slide.
