Abstract

<PICT:0764918/III/1> <PICT:0764918/III/2> <PICT:0764918/III/3> <PICT:0764918/III/4> Emulsions are produced by directing the constituents of the emulsion through the nozzle which is adjustably set so as to impinge upon a plate which is immersed in at least part of the consituents and adjusting the jet so that the plate is caused to vibrate at ultrasonic frequency and so agitates the constituents. A device for producing supersonic vibrations in plate 18 (Figs. 3 and 4) by means of a jet of liquid directed against its edge comprises two flanges 8, for attaching to the walls of a container, which serve as carrier guides for a tubular member 9 which extends through the wall of the container and is connected to the liquid supply. The end of the tubular member is threaded and by means of the tapped ring 11 its position relative to the plate can be adjusted. The front end of the member forms the conical nozzle 12 with parallel-sided slot 13 (Figs. 5 and 6) closed by tongues 14 (Figs. 5 and 6). A nut 15 allows adjustment of the breadth of the slot. A sleeve 16, rigid with respect to the flanges carries two plates 17 carrying the vibrating plate which lies in a plane defined by the jet of liquid. A screw 23 (Fig. 4) acting laterally on the plate 18 allows adjustment in a direction perpendicular to slot 13. Liquid which is pumped through 9 on to the vibrator may be continuously recirculated by a recirculating pumping system.ALSO:A method for preparing emulsified starch sizes, which do not clot or settle consists in directing a part of the mixture to be emulsified as a jet impinging edgewise on to a plate which is thereby caused to vibrate at supersonic frequency and transmits these vibrations to the rest of the liquid.
