Abstract

1456664 Cleaning apparatus DAWE INSTRUMENTS Ltd 29 Jan 1974 [15 Feb 1973 1 Aug 1973] 7396/73 and 36596/73 Heading A4F [Also in Divisions B1 C7 and H4] Cleaning apparatus comprises a tank 1 in which cleaning liquid 24 is to be cavitated by ultrasonic or other vibrations, and at least one transducer 22 for supplying vibrational energy to a first radiating surface on a plate 26 spaced from a sound radiating surface on a part 15 of a wall 12 of the tank, the space between the radiating surface containing a liquid 20 capable of transmitting the vibrational energy but not cavitated thereby to the same degree as the liquid 24. Erosion of the part 15 is less than it would be if the transducer(s) 22 supplied vibrational energy directly thereto. The cleaning liquid 24 may be a mixture of water and cleaning agent and the liquid 20 may be ethylene glycol. The amount of cavitation produced in the liquid 20 preferably does not exceed 25% of that produced in the liquid 24. In an alternative embodiment the part 15 is inclined and mounted on an inclined bottom wall 25, Fig. 2 (not shown) of the tank 11, the inclination of the part 15 permitting any air trapped between it and the first radiating surface to move to the uppermost edge of the part 15 so that it does not interrupt the transmission of vibrational energy.
