Abstract

764,704. Windscreen cleaners. O'SHEI, W. E. May 11, 1954 [May 11, 1954; Aug. 6, 1954; Oct. 25, 1954], Nos. 13726/54, 22935/54 and 30745/54. Class 138(1) [Also in Group XXVIII] Windscreen cleaning apparatus comprises two separate liquid containers 1, 1a, where at least one common discharge nozzle 3 and means for selectively discharging liquids contained in both containers through the common nozzle. Tubes 9, 9a having strainers 12, 12a in the containers 1, 1a for concentrated detergent solution and dilute detergent solution (or water) respectively, are connected by fittings 5, 5a and tubes 10, 10a, with a T-piece 15 which is connected by a tube 16 and T-piece 17 with nozzles 3, mounted in front of the windscreen. Passages in the fittings 5, 5a, connecting the tubes 9, 10 and 9a, 10a are each provided with a pair of ball valves and the passages are connected, between each pair of valves, by tubes with ports 21, 21a of a change-over valve 22, of which the rotary plug 23 has a right angled passage 24. The passage 24 can place either the port 21 or 21a in communication with a port 25 of the valve 22, the port 25 being connected by a tube 26 with a diaphragm pump 2, When the plug 23 is positioned as shown, operation of the pump will cause strong detergent solution to be supplied from the container 1 to the nozzles 3 and this solution will be prevented from entering the container 1a by the upper ball valve in the fitting 5a. When the plug is rotated to connect the ports 25, 21a, operation of the pump 2 will cause dilute detergent solution or water to be delivered from the container 1a to the nozzles. In a modification the tubes 9, 9a, may be connected directly to the ports 21, 21a and the port 25 connected by a tube to a fitting having a passage with a pair of ball valves. The passage between the valves is connected to the pump and the outlet of the fitting above the valves is connected by a tube, with the T-piece 17 and thus the nozzles 3. In another form of the invention the passages in the fittings 5, 5a are each connected between the valves therein, by a tube to a separate pump. The two pumps may be so inter-associated, that the two solutions will be automatically discharged in the correct sequence at each operation of the discharge means. The container 1 may be smaller than the container 1a and the quantity of concentrated detergent discharged at each operation may be less than the quantity of dilute solution discharged at each operation. Moreover the containers may be made of flexible plastic material and the liquids then discharged by compressing the containers. Furthermore two compartments may be formed in a single flexible container provided with a partition in which case the two compartments may be provided with shut-off valves.
