Abstract
764,628. Chucks. WOODWORTH CO., N. A. Jan. 12, 1955 [Sept. 14, 1954], No. 998/55. Addition to 760,299. Class 38 (3). A work-holder for externally-splined work comprises axially-spaced, internally-splined members 214, 216 to fit the work, e.g. interconnected pinions 242, 244, and resilient torsion means 222 coupling the members together and normally holding them in predetermined relative angular positions, the means being adjustable to allow movement of the members angularly in opposite directions. The splines in each member are formed by pins 218, e.g. six equallyspaced circumferentially, adjustable radially by screws 226 and locked by screws 228, 230. Alternatively the pins may be formed integrally with the members. To mount a workpiece, member 216 is turned by a tool 246 relatively to member 214 until the work can be engaged with the splines on both members, whereupon the tool is removed and the members are rotated by the means 222 to grip the work. An ejecting- piston 252 may be provided in a bore 254 in a base member 232, and urged by spring 256 to eject the work when the members are turned relatively by the tool to release the work.
