Abstract

764,330. Moulding cellular' resin articles. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AKT.-GES. Dec. 16, 1952 [Dec. 29, 1951], No. 31884/52. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VIII] A process for manufacturing a light-weight, load-bearing composite plastic structural unit comprising a core of a foamed polyurethane composition united to a covering layer of an unsaturated polyester resin comprises lining e.g. by spraying, brushing or applying by means of a spatula, a mould e.g. of metal, glass, "Plexiglass" (Registered Trade Mark), laminated wood, gypsum or cast resin, with a not more than partially polymerised polyester resin, preferably resins described in Specification 755, 321 [Group IV(a)] or the plastics known as Marco resins, which may be reinforced by embedded woven fabric or matting, filling the mould with a reactive foamable polyurethane composition and foaming the latter within the mould, the polyester resin being completely condensed within the mould either prior to the introduction of the polyurethane composition or, preferably, by the heat liberated in foaming the latter. The foamed core may be reinforced with inserts of foamed plastic of higher specific gravity or with inserts of wood, plastic or metal and the thickness of the covering layer may be varied in accordance with the distribution of stresses.
