In apparatus for supervising the relative positioning of the pusher machine, the coke guide machine, and the quenching car locomotive of a horizontal coke oven battery, each machine is equipped with a communication set L<SP>1</SP>, L<SP>2</SP> and L<SP>3</SP> respectively, each set comprising an amplifier a, a loud-speaker b, a microphone c, and a two-way switch d adapted either to connect the microphone c to the amplifier a for the transmission of speech or to connect the amplifier a to the loud-speaker b for the reception of speech. Switches W<SP>1</SP> and W2 connect the appropriate amplifier with conductors S<SP>1</SP> running adjacent the tracks for the pusher machine and the coke guide machine respectively, said conductors S<SP>1</SP> being interconnected by a switch W<SP>4</SP> which is also connected to a conductor rail S<SP>2</SP> adjacent the locomotive track. The locomotive has a shoe running on the conductor rail S<SP>2</SP> connected to a switch W<SP>2</SP> associated with the communication set L<SP>3</SP>. Switches W<SP>1</SP>, W<SP>2</SP> and W3 incorporate means (e.g. filter circuits), whereby speech currents and electrical signals may be segregated. Normally any of the operators may speak to the other two by operating his switch d and speaking into his microphone c. When the machines are all in position, the locomotive driver operates a switch 11 lighting a green lamp 10 on the pusher machine and actuating a relay 16 to close the circuit of the pusher motor 18 so that the latter can be operated by a controller 17. Actuation of the relay 16 is indicated on the locomotive by a lamp 14. The pushing operation may be interrupted either from the coke guide machine or from the locomotive. In the former case, the operator actuates a switch 19 releasing the relay 16 by breaking the connection between the conductor S2 and the conductor S<SP>1</SP> on the pusher machine side of the battery. A circuit is, however, provided between the controller 17 and the pusher motor 18 so that the latter can be reversed. The locomotive driver may interrupt a pushing operation by operating a switch 13 to release the relay 16. Operation of either of the switches 19 and 13 lights a red lamp 12 on the pusher machine. A limit switch 20 associated with the flopper plate on the coke guide machine has a similar action to the switch 19 so that operation of the switch 11 on the locomotive is ineffective until the coke machine is in position.
