764,144. Optical systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 4, 1955 [Feb. 6, 1954], No. 3401/55. Class 97(1) A beam splitter for separating a light beam into a plurality of colour components comprises two separate V-shaped bodies formed of planoparallel transparent plates and arranged so that the lines of intersection of the inner and outer surfaces are substantially coplanar, a layer of material which transmits substantially completely particular parts of the visible spectrum and reflects substantially completely other parts thereof being applied to the internal surfaces of one of the bodies and to the internal or external surfaces of the other. As shown the V-shaped bodies formed by plates 3, 4 and 5, 6 carrying dielectric layers 11, 12 which reflect red light and pass green and blue light, and layers 13 and 14 which reflect blue light and pass green and red. The incident beam 1, 2, 3 falls first on the plates 5 and 6 and is separated into reflected and transmitted beams which fall for further separation on the plates 3 and 4 so that green light is transmitted, red light reflected to the right and blue to the left except in the areas shown hatched. The beam-splitter is therefore of use in systems in which absence of such a band in the reflected beams is of no significance.
