Abstract
764,037. Handle-bar control mechanism. ATELIERS DE LA MOTOBECANE. Jan. 14, 1955 [April 15, 1954], No. 1238/55. Class 136(1). A control mechanism on handlebars comprises the combination of a mechanism with a rigid part nearer the handlebar and a flexible part nearer the controlled apparatus with connecting means between the two parts pivoted by a ball-and-socket on a support placed on the level of the handlebar. As shown in Fig. 1 the rigid mechanism is formed by a straight rod 6 coaxial with an arm 1 of the handlebar. One end of the rod 6 is controlled by a twist grip 2 and the other end is guided in a sleeve 7 which passes through the wall of the handlebar. A cranked lever 8 is formed on this end of the rod 6 and carries a ball 9 which fits in a socket 10, Fig. 3. A flexible cable 18 terminates at the apparatus to be controlled and is connected to a cylindrical member 15 which extends from the socket 10. The member 15 is frictionally engaged in a threaded sleeve 16 which forms a sheath abutment 17 for the cable 18. A handlebar bracket 11 carries an eye 12 forming two spherical seats 13, 14. The sleeve 16 passes freely through an opening 19 of the eye 12 and is pivoted on the latter through two collars 20, 21 with spherical cups which engage the seats 13, 14 of the eye 12. The collars 20, 21 are adjustable by screwing along the sleeve 16. When the rod 6 is turned the connecting assembly 10-17 oscillates around the point o, Fig. 3, as centre so that the ball and socket joint 9, 10 can occupy the extreme or intermediate positions indicated at a, b, c.
