In a motor vehicle the steering gear box 25, which receives the lower end of the spindle 11 carrying the steering wheel, is resiliently supported at 26 in relation to the steering column 10 and the vehicle body 24, the upper end of the spindle 11 being mounted in a ball bearing 18 in the column 10, In Fig. 2 (not shown) the bearing 18 is arranged above a collar on the spindle 11, and the inner race of the bearing is urged against the collar by a spring between the inner race and the steering wheel hub. Rubber sealing rings are arranged between the top of the steering column and the steering wheel hub. The steering column may carry a change speed gear control lever.
