Abstract
A process of manufacturing organic isocyanates from organic amines and phosgene includes passing an inert solvent solution of an amine into an organic solvent solution of phosgene, at least 1.25 mols. of phosgene being present per equivalent -NH2 group of the amine, the reaction being conducted under superatmospheric pressure and under conditions of turbulent flow while maintaining the temperature above that at which the carbamyl chloride of the particular amine employed is decomposed. Solvents mentioned include mono- and o- and p - dichlorobenzenes, trichlorobenzenes, the corresponding toluenes and xylenes, chloroethylbenzene, monochlorodiphenyl and a - and b -naphthyl chlorides. Amine starting materials mentioned include aniline, toluidine, benzidine, naphthylamines, 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diamines, the phenylene diamines, 4,41-diamino diphenyl methane, 1,5-naphthalene diamine, 1-amino-3-(4-aminophenyl) propane, anisidine or chloranilines. Diisocyanates are obtained in examples by pumping o-dichlorobenzene from a reservoir through heated stainless steel or glass tubular reactors into which phosgene and then the amines in solution are introduced and the mixtures are returned to the reservoir, 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate being obtained when using m-tolylene diamine as starting material (1-3, 5-7), and methylene bis-(phenylisocyanate) (1 and 4) and 4,41-diphenyl isocyanate (1) respectively, when using methylene bis-(4-phenylamine) and benzidine as starting materials.
