Abstract

1346402 Polyisocyanate mixtures BAYER AG 10 May 1972 [11 May 1971] 21934/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] A polisocyanate mixture comprises (a) from 2 to 60% by weight of a distillation residue obtained from the large-scale distillation of a crude diisocyanatotoluene isomer mixture, which residue has (i) a carbodiimide group content of less than 1À4% by weight, (ii) a content of phosgenation products of 2,3- or 3,4-diaminotoluene or biuret derivatives thereof, corresponding to an O-diamine content of more than 2% by weight in the amine mixture used for phosgenation, (iii) an NCO-group content of from 15 to 32% by weight and (iv) a monomeric diisocyanatotoluene content of less than 15%; and (b) from 40 to 98% by weight of a polyphenyl polymethylene polyisocyanate mixture comprising from 50 to 100% by weight of trinuclear diisocyanato diphenylmethane isomers, obtained by phosgenating an aniline/formaldehyde condensate. This distillation residue (c) is obtained by working up of the crude diisocyanatotoluene at a temperature not above 200‹ C. Preferably the polyphenyl polymethylene polyisocyanate (b) has a binuclear diisocyanate content of 65 to 97% by weight. The polyisocyanate mixtures are advantageously produced by mixing the distillation residue heated to 80‹ to 200‹ C., with the polyphenyl polymethylene polyisocyanate, which preferably is also heated. Both cellular and non- cellular polyurethanes may be produced from the polyisocyanate mixtures (see Division C3).
