Abstract

A thixotropic preparation for the dissolution and removal of rust, scale and like oxides from a metal surface comprises a colloidal clay, which is the principal single component of the preparation, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid and a reducing agent. The clay may be Bentonite and the reducing agent, stannous chloride or a hydrazine salt, e.g. the hydrate. The preparation may also include a hygroscopic material, e.g. calcium chloride or glycerine, a wetting agent, and ammonium alum.
