Abstract

The invention comprises a dodecahydrophenanthrene of the formula <FORM:0763210/IV(b)/1> wherein the 7-position is substituted by a bivalent group convertible to keto by acid hydrolysis or a pair of univalent groups convertible to a single keto group by acid hydrolysis, and a decahydrophenanthrene of the formula <FORM:0763210/IV(b)/2> wherein the 7-position is substituted by a univalent group convertible to keto by acid hydrolysis. Examples of bivalent groups are cyclic ketal and cyclic thioketal groups such as ethylenedioxy, ethylene dithioketal and ethylene hemithioketal groups, examples of pairs of univalent groups are the non-cyclic ketals such as dimethyl ketal, and examples of univalent groups are the enol ether groups such as ethyl enol ether. The above compounds are prepared by the oxidation of the corresponding 1,4-dihydroxy-compounds by means of aluminium alkoxide and a ketone or by means of a complex of chromium trioxide and pyridine. In the examples two stereoisomers of 4b-methyl-1-keto-4 - hydroxy - 7 - ethylenedioxy - 1,2,3,4,4a,4b, 5,6,7,8,10,10a - dodecahydrophenanthrene are prepared melting points of 219-220 DEG C. and 130-138 DEG C.
