Abstract
An aluminiothermic mixture for use in the manufacture of steels and alloy steels comprises a mixture of (a) an alloy consisting of: Si 30-45 per cent; Al 35-55 per cent; Fe 10-25 per cent; Ti 2-15 per cent and obtained electrically from a starting material containing aluminium oxide, silica, iron oxide and titanium oxide such as alumina, low-grade bauxite, low-grade ash-containing coal, boiler ash or processing slag, and (b) iron ore. The mixture together with small amounts of alkali or alkaline earth metal salts and, if necessary, magnesium may be used in the powdered form or briquetted. The oxygen content of the ore may be up to 15 per cent higher than that required to react with tin alloy and is preferably inversely proportion to the silicon content of the ore. The mixture can be ignited on a pan or furnace hearth or in a shaft furnace, rotary furnace, convertor or drum mixer for the direct production of low-carbon steel or can be added to a steel or pig iron charge in an open-hearth furnace or converter. The mixture may be carried into the furnace or melting bath by a stream of air, oxygen, oxygen-enriched air, nitrogen, nitrogen-enriched air or argon and scrap may be added to the charge to regulate the reaction temperature.
