Abstract

An article of or containing rubber is provided with an undercoating or a pigmented outer coating comprising cyclized rubber. The articles may be of vulcanized or unvulcanized rubber, the term rubber including natural rubbers such as guttapercha and balata, synthetic rubbers and compositions in which gutta-percha or balata is associated with natural rubber, with synthetic rubber or with synthetic rubber co-polymerized in the presence of natural rubber latex. The cyclized rubber is preferably acid-cyclized rubber made by th process of Specification 634,879, [Group V], which may be mixed with pigments, plasticizers or dispersing agents. In examples (1) an undercoating made by milling cyclized rubber prepared according to Specification 634,879 with xylol, then adding a dispersing agent comprising an alkanolamine soap of a fatty acid, boiled linseed oil, titanium oxide, zinc oxide, and ultramarine, and diluting with xylol after further milling, is applied to golf balls, which are finished by the application of three coats of a normal white golf-ball paint; (2) cyclized rubber made as above is mixed with toluol in a vortex mixer and stored for 14 days in a sealed container, and then titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, pale boiled linseed oil and the above-mentioned dispersing agent are added; after milling in a ball-mill and thinning with white spirit, the mixture is sprayed on to golf balls, dried, and given up to three coats of a finishing paint having an oil-modified alkyd resin vehicle.
