Abstract

762,323. Soot-blowers. COCKBURNS, Ltd. May 26, 1955 [July 23, 1954], No. 21518/54. Class 99(2) In a soot-blower including a nozzle head 10 advanced and retracted to and from the operative position, a flow of air is induced into the steam flow through the head for admixture in and discharge with the steam from the head. As shown, the head 10 is formed with outlet orifices 10a and is carried at the forward end of a tube 12 guided for axial movement in an externally flanged tubular body 11 provided with inclined ports 15a through which air passes via an annular chamber 15 to passages 14 in the head. Steam is conducted to an annular chamber 16 surrounding part of the tube 12, the latter being provided with ports 17 which, as the tube is advanced, enter the chamber to allow steam to flow to the head. A skew slot 18 is formed in the wall of the body 11 and engaged by a follower 19 attached to the head 10 so that as the tube 12 is advanced and retracted the head is partially rotated about the longitudinal axis of the soot-blower. Connected to the rear end of the tube 12 is a piston 20 slidable within a cylinder 21 affording at the rear end thereof an operating oil chamber 22, and a rod 24 attached to the piston is acted on by a helical compression spring 23. Oil pressure admitted to the chamber 22 advances the tube 12, and the release of pressure from that chamber allows the spring 23 to withdraw the head 10 from operation. A number of soot-blowers can be operated selectively from a control station, Fig. 3, and by a motor-operated oil pump 25 which delivers oil through a twoway valve 26 to a header 27 provided with valves 28 connected by pipes to the chambers 22 of the several soot-blowers. The valve 26 is geared to the pump 25 so as to connect the selected blower or blowers alternately to pressure and exhaust as required. A valve 29 controls the steam supply to the blowers.
