Abstract

In preparing a surgical dressing, which will allow the passage of water vapour but not liquid, a solution of a water-insoluble film-forming substance is spread on a net fabric, the solution is allowed to evaporate to form a film and a layer of a pressure-sensitive adhesive is applied to the whole or a part of the other side of the net fabric by doctor blade, the spreading thickness, viscosity of the adhesive and drying conditions being so correlated that the coating of adhesive, after evaporation of the solvent contained therein, is not continuous but has minute apertures occurring in some or all the meshes of the net fabric. The film-former may be a polymer or copolymer of a vinyl compound, a nylon polymer or copolymer, polyvinyl acetal, a polymer of acrylic, or methacrylic acids, or esters thereof, a synthetic rubber, rubber hydrochloride or chlorinated rubber and the solvent may be alcohol, acetone, ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, or toluene. A 34-hole Bretonne net made from 2/120's warp and 70's single bobbins, with nylon, cotton, or rubber covered thread, and having apertures 0.5-3 m.m. is coated on one side by drawing the net along the bottom of a trough, into which the solution of film-forming substance was introduced, and out through a slit defined by a doctor blade. In the example a 32 per cent solution of polyvinyl acetal in a mixture of acetone and ethyl acetate is applied to a cotton net.
