Abstract

Polymers are made by polymerizing a fluorine-containing monomer alone or in admixture with another monomer in aqueous media in the presence of a chloro-fluorocarboxylic acid containing a chain of at least five carbon atoms or salt thereof as the dispersing agent, and a polymerization catalyst. Fluorine-containing polymers mentioned are trifluorochloroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene fluoride, trifluoroethylene, 1 : 1-dichloro-2 : 2-difluoroethylene, 1 : 2-dichloro - 1 : 2 - difluorethylene, and 1 : 1 : 1-trifluoropropylene. Othe monomers specified are vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, vinyl acetate and vinyl propionate. The chlorofluorocarboxylic acid may be obtained by the oxidation of a chlorofluorocarbon oil with permanganate in a weakly alkaline medium. The oil may be obtained by cracking a chlorotrifluoroethylene polymer and may have a boiling range of 30 DEG to 170 DEG C. under 5 mms. mercury pressure. The catalyst may be a peroxy compound such as potassium persulphate or an alkali metal salt of peroxydisulphuric acid, mixed if desired with reducing agents such as sodium sulphite or bisulphite, or an alkali metal salt of formaldehyde-sulphoxylic acid or a dithionite and/or the salt of a metal having more than one valency state, e.g. iron, cobalt, copper, or nickel. The aqueous medium may contain buffers such as secondary sodium phosphate, borax, or acetates. The polymer may be recovered from the latex by coagulation techniques and dispersed in organic solvents such as esters of glycollic acid with acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, amyl alcohol or mesitylene. The latex may be used for coating and impregnating porous materials. Specification 758,419 is referred to.
