Abstract

761,218. Ventilation. AIR & REFRIGERATION CORPORATION. Dec. 16, 1954 [Dec. 21, 1953], No. 36445/54. Class 137 [Also in Group XII] An air-conditioning unit comprises a casing 12 with air inlet 13 and outlet 14<SP>I</SP>, a liquid reservoir 18 into which dips a rotating washer and humidifier 38, refrigerating coils 39 also dipping into the reservoir, a moisture eliminator 40, a heater 41 and a blower 32 which draws air through the unit into a duct 37 for distribution to the rooms of a house. The washer is made up of a number of spaced screens 42, 43 of expanded metal &c. alternate screens having the major axes of their openings at right angles; all are mounted on a central shaft 44 and are additionally connected by diametrically disposed tie rods 48. The assembly is rotated by a motor 57 at 2-3 revolutions per minute. A spray head 59 may admit water periodically to flush the screens. Coils 39 are supplied with refrigerant for expansion from a compressor 31. An immersed heating coil 70 is supplied with steam &c. through a valve controlled by a hygrostat 74 in duct 37. During winter a water-triethylene glycol solution is preferably used and the concentration is maintained, despite water replenishment through the reservoir ball valve 21, by the automatic periodic supply from a small container of a few drops of the glycol at intervals, a spring-operated flap valve to effect this discharge being operated by a pin on a worm gear rotated from a shaft connected by bevel gearing with the shaft 44.
