Abstract

761,137. Laminated materials. DUNLAP, A. H. Aug. 5, 1953, No. 21601/53. Class 140. Lengths of corner bead composed of a transversely-bent metal or plastic core strip having a flexible tape such as paper bonded thereto are made by continuously advancing flat stock materials for the core strip and the tape along guided travel paths which merge, deforming the metal or plastic strip to the requisite shape before its path merges with that of the tape, bonding the core strip and tape together, thereby forming the corner bead, and cutting the corner bead into lengths. As shown, a strip of paper T, Fig. 1, from a reel 31 is passed through a cleaning box 67 where surface lint scraped off by bowed spring metal leaves is withdrawn by suction, under a device 58 which applies adhesive from a rotating tubular nozzle to a restricted, e.g. central, zone of the paper, and, if desired, or necessary, through a drying oven 115 where the adhesive is'heated by infra-red lamps 116. The metal strip is unwound from a reel 30 and, after passing over guide rolls 35, 36, and 37, is passed through a driven set of rolls 38 which progressively deform the strip into a V cross-section with the ridge at the bottom. The deformed strip is fed along a trough 40, in which it is maintained by free-turning guide rollers 41, and is brought into contact at roll 127 with the adhesive-coated paper strip, guides being provided to ensure correct alignment. The two strips are united by pressing first between a roller 130, Fig. 8, bevelled to fit the trough in the metal strip and a cylindrical roller 136 with a shallow central V-groove taking only the apical portion of the core strip, and then between rollers 131 and 132 similarly shaped to roller 130 and pairs of rollers 144 inclined at 45 degrees. The composite strip is cut into predetermined lengths by a blade 172 actuated by a solenoid 183 when the front end of the composite strip touches a trigger which operates a micro-switch controlling the solenoid. In order to counteract shrinkage of the paper tape as the adhesive dries, the composite strip is bent slightly upwards after leaving the pressure rolls, by passing between a pair of guide rolls 156 inclined at 45 degrees and a ball-shaped foot 157. A lever 50, Fig. 1, one end of which rides on the reel 31, causes an electric bell 53 to ring when the tape on the reel nears depletion.
