Abstract

An antioxidant concentrate for fats, fatty oils and fatty acids comprises one or more antioxidants and mixed glycerides of fats and fatty oils as a solvent therefor, the mixed glycerides containing a major porportion of monoglycerides and a minor proportion of di - and tri- - glycerides. The mixed glycerides preferably contain between 70 and 90 per cent by weight of monoglycerides and between 30 and 10 per cent by weight of di - and tri-glycerides. They may be derived from lard, corn oil, cottonseed oil or soya oil and may be prepared as described in Specifications 682,625 and 682,626. The solvents may be used in admixture with propylene glycol. The antioxidants preferably comprise gallic acid esters and alkylated hydroxyphenyl ethers, used separately or together and with or without a synergizing acid or ester. The gallic acid esters preferably have an ester radical comprising an alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbon atoms. The compounds exemplified include n-propyl gallate and n-lauryl gallate. The alkylated hydroxyphenyl ethers preferably comprise tertiarybutyl or tertiaryl-amyl hydroxy anisoles or phenetoles. The compounds exemplified include 3 - tertiarybutyl - 4 - hydroxyanisole and 2 - tertiarybutyl - 4 - hydroxyanisole. The synergizing acid or ester may be citric acid, monoisopropyl citrate, 2 - hydroxypropyl citrate, orthophosphoric acid, tartaric acid or ascorbic acid. The fats, fatty oils and fatty acids which may be stabilized include lard, palm oil, cottonseed oil, soya bean oil and stearic acid.
