Abstract

760,796. Catalytic burners. GOGAS, GOCH & CO. Jan. 19, 1953 [March 10, 1952], No. 1559/53. Class 75(1) A flameless combustion burner for propane, methane, or coal or other gas comprises a catalytic layer e<SP>11</SP> disposed in a housing a on a porous ceramic or metallic heat storage plate e having a minimum width substantially greater than its thickness, a shallow gas distributing chamber being formed between the plate e and the base of the housing a. Gas is supplied to the burner through a pipe b provided with a flow restricting orifice member c. The catalytic layer e<SP>11</SP> may comprise asbestos fibres or silica gel to which is bonded platinum or other catalytically active precious metal, or cobalt, iron, nickel, or alloys thereof. The heat store in the plate e stabilizes combustion and also prevents condensation on and consequent poisoning of the catalyst when the burner is extinguished, adequate heat storage being ensured by covering the walls of the housing a with heat insulation i. The heat storage plate e may be preheated before the burner is ignited by means of an electric heating device (not shown).
