Abstract

<PICT:0760511/III/1> <PICT:0760511/III/2> A pressure reaction vessel is provided with an agitator comprising an electric motor 25 within a housing 32 and a rotatable shaft 20 provided with blades 19, the motor being positioned entirely within the pressure vessel and being immersed in a body of cooling fluid 28 within the housing, and the housing being discontinuous at the top so that the pressure on the cooling fluid is equalized with that in the pressure vessel. The cooling fluid, e.g. oil, is introduced through pipe 30 into an enclosure 29, flows via bearings 31 into housing 32, and leaves at 33. The housing 32 rotates with the shaft 20. Openings 38 lead from the housing 32 into a jacket 35 which is in communication with the reaction section 17 of the pressure vessel. A liquid seal 40 is provided at the bottom of the jacket 35 to prevent gaseous reactants coming into contact with the cooling fluid; the pressure in the jacket 35 may be maintained slightly above that in the reaction section of the vessel by supplying gas through pipe 44. A splash shield 39 is arranged on the shaft 20. Reactants enter the reaction vessel at 18 and circulate through a central tube 21, product leaving through pipe 22 and outlet 23. The reaction section of the vessel is provided with insulation 15 and corrosion resistant lining 16. Reference is made to the reaction of a mixture of coal and oil with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature above 400 DEG C. and a pressure above 3,000 lbs. per sq. in. to form a product containing aromatic and volatile hydrocarbons, nitrogen derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons, and nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds.
