Abstract
A metal body is joined to a carbon body by forming a metal carbide layer over the surface area of one of said bodies during a preliminary heat-treatment and joining the two bodies by a further heat-treatment to form a carbide bond between the second body and the carbide layer. A conventional jointing method such as spot welding is used. The carbide layer may be formed from a metallic layer on the carbon, preferably by using a mixed metallic powder of tungsten with nickel, iron or cobalt. To avoid excessive combination of carbon and the metal surface, an intermediate coating of the metal by a metal less absorbent of carbon may be used e.g. steel may be coated with nickel or copper. The powder may be used as it is or applied in a small quantity of bonding medium.
