Abstract

A therapeutic composition comprises a mixture of procaine penicillin, which may be present from 30 to 70 per cent of the penicillin activity, and dibenzylethylene diamine penicillin. Salts of penicillin O, penicillin F or dihydropenicillin F may be used but salts of penicillin G are preferred. The composition, which may contain an equal number of units of procaine penicillin and dibenzylethylenediamine penicillin, may also contain other antibiotics such as water-soluble sodium, potassium, calcium or ammonium penicillin, streptomycin, dihydrostreptomycin, oxytetracycline, viamycin and polymyxin. The composition may take the form of an injectable suspension in sterile water, saline solution, sesame or peanut oil which is formed immediately prior to injection from a preserved dry mixture of the individual components. Other substances which may be present are lecithin, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium citrate, phenol, benzyl alcohol, polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-long chain fatty acid esters, and esters of parahydroxy benzoic acid.
