759,536. Cleaning metallurgical converters. JENKINS, J. Feb. 23, 1955 [Feb. 25, 1954], No. 5527/54. Class 72. A device for removing the skull from the mouth of a Bessemer converter comprises a portable platform carrying a turntable pivoted at its centre and provided with uprights supporting one or more sockets into which chisels may be inserted. As shown, a turntable 3 is pivotally mounted on a portable platform 1 and is provided with rails on which run two uprights 4 supporting between them a shaft 11 carrying sockets 12. The uprights may be moved by means of a threaded rod 8 operating in a nut 7 carried on a strut between the uprights. Chisels, e.g. formed from railway rails, may be inserted in the sockets 12 which may be made rigid with the shaft 11, e.g. by pins. The converter is moved on its trunnions so that the interior of the mouth strikes the chisels and any skull present is chipped off.
