Abstract

759,332. Collapsible spindles. LANDO PRODUCTS, Inc. Sept. 22, 1954, No. 27467/54. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for winding strip material, e.g. aluminium strip from a rolling mill, comprises a collapsible winding reel 13, means for contracting or expanding said reel comprising a plurality of radially extending spokes 29 each of which is adapted to engage a retractable shoe 26 which forms one part of said reel periphery, and means for introducing an advancing portion of said strip about said reel comprising a belt 14 adapted to engage the periphery of said reel and advancing strip. The reel 13 includes a plate 24, secured to a hollow driving shaft 12 and formed on one face with radial guides 27 in which are slidable radial arms 28 of the reel shoes or segments 26, adjacent segments fitting together as shown in Fig. 6. The segments 26 are moved radially by the spokes or links 29 connected to a hub 30 on an axially movable shaft 31 extending through the hollow shaft 12. To guide incoming strip round the reel 13, a horizontal guide 23 is moved adjacent the reel and an endless belt 14, running over pulleys 15 on swingable arms 16, is wrapped around the reel. The arms 16 are carried on shafts 17 journalled in a bracket 20 movable on guides 21 to and from the reel 13 by fluid pressure means 22. Gears 18 rigid on the shafts 17 engage a stationary rack 19 so that the arms 16 are swung in as the bracket 20 rises and out as the bracket 20 descends. The guide 23 and belt 14 are moved away from the reel 13 after the first few turns of strip have been wound thereon.
