Abstract

759,238. Sterilizing liquids. COTTRELL, H. L. (Gerbig Ges., W.). Nov. 25, 1954, No. 34218/54. Class 49. The sterilization of liquids, foodstuffs preserved with juice, especially milk, fruit juices and beverages, is carried out in a steam-heated cylindrical autoclave drum 2 in which filled and closed bottles, &c., 7 are held between partitions or baskets 6, the lowermost of which rests on the supports 5. The drum rotates on the axis 12, 12<SP>1</SP> and is provided with a removable lid 3 and safety valve 4. Nesting studs 8 are fixed to each basket and incorporate a hook 18 to enable removal of the basket by a pulley block and tackle. The bottles are held by two fixed perforated plates 9, 10 and by a resilient insert 11 I e.g. of rubber placed loosely on the bottles or fixed under the base of the basket above a lid 3. Steam is introduced through the hollow shaft 12 and flows out at the other side 12<SP>1</SP> past a monometer 14 and thermometer 15 ; a distribution plate 13 is incorporated in the druxn. Suitable drum speeds are 3-5 complete revolutions per minute.
