Abstract

759,131. Luminescent materials; discharge lamps. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Jan. 4, 1952 [Feb. 2, 1951], No. 327/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). A luminescent composition comprises the fired reaction product of a cadmium phosphate, a halide or halides formed by one of the group consisting of chlorine and fluorine and at least one of group consisting of zinc, strontium, barium, and magnesium in the presence of zinc, and manganese as activator and having the formula 3Cd 3 (PO 4 )u.vMgL 2 .wZnL 2 .xSrL 2 .yBaL 2 : zMn, where L stands for a halogen of the group chlorine and fluorine, and where u lies between and including 2 and 2.5 and v, w, x, y and z are subject to specified limitations. The cadmium phosphate part of the composition may be produced from cadmium oxide, hydroxide, nitrate, carbonate, or phosphate and mono- or di-ammonium acid phosphate, phosphoric acid or phosphorous pentoxide. The manganese activator can be produced from hydrated manganese chloride, manganese carbonate, oxide, sulphate, nitrate or phosphate. Ammonium chloride may be present in the starting materials. The starting materials are mixed, ground for at least one hour and fired in a covered tray for 1.5 to 4 hours at a temperature of 700-980‹ C. Several specific compositions are described. The luminescent composition can be blended in specified proportions with zinc silicate and magnesium tungstate to produce white luminescence. The composition can be applied to the interior surface of a lamp envelope which is then baked in a lehr at a temperature of from 593‹ to 621‹ C. In tests on the luminescent composition, materials having the formulµ 3Ca 3 (PO 4 ) u .CaFCl : Sb : Mn and ZnBeSiO 4 : Mn are used for comparison.
