Abstract

Polyethylene is stabilized against thermal oxidation by addition of a compound of the general formula <FORM:0758973/IV(a)/1> wherein R and R1 are alkyl, cycloalkyl or alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl groups, or a normal or basic aluminium, barium, calcium, magnesium, strontium, or zinc salt of such a compound. Specified compounds are 2,6-bis-(2-hydroxy - 3,5 - dimethyl benzyl) - 4 - methyl phenol; 2,6 - bis - (2 - hydroxy - 3 - t - butyl - 5-methyl benzyl)-4-methyl phenol; and 2,6-bis-(2 - hydroxy - 3 - a - methyl cyclohexyl-5-methyl benzyl)-4-methyl phenol. The compound is thoroughly mixed with the polyethylene which is preferably softened by heat. Fillers, other stabilizers, dyes, pigments, waxes and other compatible polymers may be present, and the composition may be used to form shaped articles. Specification 571,943 is referred to.ALSO:A compound of the general formula <FORM:0758973/IV(a)/1> wherein R and R1 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, or alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl groups is prepared by combining in the presence of an acid condensing agent one molecular proportion of 2 : 6-dimethylol-4-methyl phenol with two molecular proportions of the appropriate 2-alkyl-4-methyl phenol or 2-cycloalkyl-4-methyl phenol or a mixture of such compounds. The compound or the normal and basic aluminium, barium, calcium, magnesium, strontium and zinc salts made in the usual way, may be used as thermal stabilizers for polyethylene.
