In a house or flat, a cubicle 11, which extends from the floor 12 on which a boiler 24 stands to the ceiling 13 or higher as shown, contains a hot-water cylinder 21, a water-heated air heater 15, air-circulating means 17, and pipes 26, 27 connecting the cylinder and air heater together and to the boiler. The cubicle and its contents form a unit. A space in the cubicle above the cylinder 21 is used as a linen cupboard. A fan 17 impels air from a louvred inlet 19 over the heater 15 to a louvred outlet 16. In the form shown, the air heater 15 is connected in parallel with a heater in the cylinder 21 : the junctions 29, 30 between the pipes connecting the two heaters are provided with tongues 31, Fig. 2. Alternatively, the air heater may be in series with the cylinder. In another form, the air heater comprises a series of horizontal finned tubes the ends of which are connected to the upper and lower compartments 42, 43 in a header 40, Fig. 6. The bends of the tubes are supported in a rectangular box connected by channel bars to the header. Water from the boiler passes through an inlet 52 into a corner compartment 45, and then, if an opening 47 controlled by a valve 50 is open, through the compartment 42, the U-tubes, and the compartment 43 to an outlet 55. If the opening 47 is closed, flow through the airheating tubes is prevented. Water also flows from the inlet 52 through a pipe 53 to the cylinder, and returns through the pipe 56 and outlet 55. In a block of flats, the cubicle may extend up through several floors, each with its own hot-water cylinder and air heater, and is divided at each floor level by a transverse fireproof partition.
