Abstract

758,807. Winding yarns. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Nov. 9, 1954 [Nov. 10, 1953], No. 32391/54. Class 120 (2). A winding machine comprises a plurality of mountings for carrying rotatable package supports, said mountings being movable consecutively with, but otherwise independently of, one another from a common operative position where a yarn package support is engaged by driving means to wind yarn on said support to an inoperative position where said support is disengaged from said driving means. As shown, the machine comprises two pairs of articulated arms 29, 28 ; 29a, 28a, each pair being pivoted together at 31, 31a and rotatable about a shaft 32, each pair also being connected by a lost-motion link 44, 47; 44a, 47a. A tube 13 on the expansible mandrel 17 on an arbour 18, carried by the arm 28, is brought into contact with a driven roll 19 to effect winding of the yarn 11 thereon, the yarn being traversed by a guide 22. In the winding position the arm 29, which comprises two spaced bars 36, is supported by a dog 39 attached to a shaft 66 slidable in a sleeve by the operation of a piston 71 in a pneumatic cylinder 72, operated by an electrical timing apparatus 74 (not shown), after a given winding time has elapsed. The removal of the dog 39 allows the arms 29, 28 to move under gravity about the shaft 32, a latch 53 meanwhile engaging a notch 56 in the link 44; the empty tube 13a on the arms 29a, 28a (previously supported by a pin 58 on the arm 29 being brought to a position for winding. As the arms 29, 28 swing to doffing position, a spring-urged pawl 76 carried thereby engages a cut-out 77 in the shaft 32 to hold the arms in that position. Just before doffing position is reached, gravity removes the full package from the restraint of the latch 53 and an adjustable cam-plate 107 on the arm 29 operates an adjustable microswitch 102 which through solenoids 110, actuates a four-way air valve 101 (not shown), to move a piston in a cylinder 94 to rock a shaft 92 and bring a knife 87 into position for severing the yarn extending to the package in doffing position. Air from a perforated pipe 126 blows about the inner surface of the curved plate 89 carrying the knife 87 to ensure that the severed end is taken up by the new tube 13a. After doffing, the operator swings the arm 29, 28 clockwise about the shaft 32 to take up the position formerly occupied by the arm 29a, 28a. The arms 29, 28 ; 29a, 28a are each furnished with compression springs and washers on pins 48, 48a to give damping to the linkage. Specification 746,693 is referred to.
