Abstract

758,803. Colour television tubes. COLUMBIA BROADCASTING SYSTEM, Inc. Oct. 19, 1954 [Oct. 20, 1953], No. 30109/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). The luminescent screen of a curved-mask, curved-screen colour television receiver tube is made by applying the phosphors each in a single stage by settling the phosphor through a liquid cushion, applying photo-sensitive resist material, exposing it at the appropriate angle to light passing through the mask, developing and washing away unexposed areas of resist and underlying phosphor. The screen surface is first thoroughly cleaned and covered with de-ionized water, a precipitating agent is added and a green phosphor mixed with a silicate solution is settled through the water cushion on to the screen, the silicate and the precipitating agent forming silica gel which acts as a binder. The water is decanted and a photo-sensitive resist, e.g. dichromated colloids, albumen gelatin or polyvinyl alcohol is sprayed on, baked at low temperature and exposed. Washing with de-ionized water and detergent removes unexposed resist and a weak solution of formic acid hardens the resulting screen. The process is repeated for the blue and red phosphors. The screen is finally baked, coated lightly with silicate solution, dried, and aluminized. The exposure mask is that used in the tube or a copy, and the point-source of light for the exposure may be an argon arc, placed as required in the position of the appropriate gun of the tube.
