Abstract

<PICT:0758579/III/1> A metal such as aluminium, antimony, bismuth, tin or zinc, which fuses at the temperature of halogenation and forms a volatile halide, is changed into a shaft having a lower inclined limb with a lower interior wall comprising a series of steps, melted in said shaft and allowed to flow down the steps, whilst an ascending current of halogen gas, with a carrier gas if desired, contacts the metal flowing down said steps so as to convert it completely to the halide which is withdrawn from the upper portion of the shaft. The shaft and lower limb may if desired consist of or be lined with graphite, carbon blocks or sillimanite. In the apparatus shown, aluminium granules are fed from hopper 1 into shaft 2 and after melting the metal passes into the limb 3 in which each of the steps has a groove 12 in the upper surface running parallel to its vertical face and formed by means of alternate long and short blocks 11 and 10 respectively. A gas flame in a side limb 5 of a jacket 4 surrounding the reactor provides the necessary heat, and measured amounts of chlorine and nitrogen enter the apparatus through flow meters 13 and 14. Aluminium chloride and nitrogen are removed through outlet 16.
