Abstract

Fluorine- or fluorine and chlorine-containing carboxylic acids are prepared by subjecting to oxidation a polymer or copolymer containing fluorine, or fluorine and chlorine, and, if desired, hydrogen, and having "weak linkages," i.e. places in the macromolecules which are accessible to oxidative degradation, such as carbon atoms attached to hydrogen, the end groups of telomers, and double bonds. The polymer or copolymer may be a chlortrifluoroethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, polytrifluorethylene, a telomer obtained by polymerizing chlortrifluorethylene in the presence of chloroform, or an unsaturated degradation product obtained by thermal cracking of polychlorotrifluorethylene. The oxidizing agent used may be oxygen, ozone, a nitrogen oxide, a peroxide or peracid, nitric acid, sulphuric acid, a permanganate or bichromate or chlorine gas and water, and the reaction may be initiated by catalysts such as salts of manganese, chromium or cobalt. An example describes the production of a chlortrifluorethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer at 100 DEG C. under a pressure of 38 atmospheres using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst.
