Abstract

757,876. Inking-pads. CARIBONUM, Ltd., and FRANCIS, F. G. Dec. 20, 1954, No. 36828/54. Class 100(2). A stamp pad comprises two superposed porous components of different resiliencies forming an ink-receiving pad, the pad being so supported on a base that ink may be supplied beneath the lower surface of the pad, whence it is transferred to the upper surface, e.g. at least partly by the pumping action as a stamp is pressed on to the pad; one or both adjacent surfaces of the pad and base may be shaped to promote uniform spreading of the ink supplied. It is stated that the movement of the ink generally upwards prevents dust from penetrating below the top of the pad. As shown, a pad formed of a natural or synthetic polymer, e.g. of porous rubber or expanded nylon, and consisting of an upper relatively rigid sheet 18 and a lower soft resilient sheet 19 which may be initially inked before or after assembly rests on the base 11 of a rectangular box having raised projections such as studs 12 to provide a space 20 into which ink may be supplied via a short polyvinyl chloride tube 22 cut away at 23 and extending into a well 13; the tube passes through a hole 16 in the turned-over top edge of one of the long sides of the box and through corresponding holes in the sheets 18, 19. The box, with its studs and well, may be pressed out of steel sheet or tinplate, or moulded from polyvinyl chloride, and may be provided with a lid, e.g. hinged and with a fastening. For use with large stamps the sheets 18, 19 may be interchanged. In modifications, the studs 12 are replaced by projections on the underside of the sheet 19, by grooves (e.g. a parallel series on the base 11 and sheet 19, the two series being inclined or at right angles), or by a layer of coarse paper, fabric or other absorbent material. Examples are given of suitable non-oil base inks and castor oil base inks for both initial inking and for supply in bottles for re-inking.
