Abstract
757,765. Correcting rotary unbalance. AVERY, Ltd., W. & T. July 3, 1954, No. 19553/54. Class 106 (2). The invention relates to apparatus for determining a suitable axis of rotation of a revolving article for finish machining operations of the kind wherein the article is revolved on an axis which is displaceable relative to its axis of inertia. One such apparatus is described in Specification 715,764, [Group XXXVIII], wherein the displacement is such that the axis of rotation, afterwards used as the finishing axis, is brought into coincidence with the axis of inertia. This axis, however, does not coincide with the geometric axis and final machining introduces further unbalance. According to the present invention the chosen finishing axis is displaced from the axis of inertia by an amount calculated so that on finishing the unbalance thereby resulting is eliminated. In the disc-shaped example shown in Fig. 1 the rotor has an unbalance mass at a distance a from its geometric axis and instead of an axis of rotation coinciding with the axis of inertia being found an axis M1 is determined which is such that on machine finishing about that axis the sickle F1 is removed to bring the axis of rotation of the finished workpiece into coincidence with its final axis of inertia M1. To achieve this the necessary residual unbalance is calculated from samples of the production articles and this unbalance is added to the article under test by means of an annular equalizing mass 1, Fig. 5, supported on the article 3 by two spring- loaded supports 8a and two adjustable supports 7b, the workpiece 3 and the mass 1 being held in a chuck 4 secured to the shaft of a balancing machine. The relative positions of the ring 1 and work 3 are adjusted until they revolve together oscillation-free, whereupon the axis M 1 can be drilled on the work faces.
