[Also in Group V] Apparatus for granulating powdery, pasty or doughy materials comprises a hollow cylindrical or conical screen, at least one rotating severing device outside the screen, and a member rotating within the screen and provided with inclined surfaces conveying material axially to the screen and with surfaces so formed as to provide, in association with the inner surface of the screen, spaces wedge-shaped in cross-section of the member whereby rotation alone of the material by the member forces material out through the screen. As shown in Fig. 1 and, in cross-section, in Fig. 2, material from a hopper 2 is fed into a housing 1 by a worm 4 on the driven shaft 3 which in conjunction with a reverse worm 5 extrudes it through the perforated central part of the housing. The outer edges of the worms 4 and 5 are curved (see Fig. 2) to form the rotating wedge-shaped space, and material forced out through the screen is severed into regular lengths by a cutter 7 which may be mounted on the shaft 3, as shown, or driven independently. Figs. 5 and 6 show an alternative apparatus in which a single worm 4 supplies material to a screening drum 10 at the end of casing 1, the shaft 3 carrying a cylindrical head 11 with spiral wedge-shaped grooves 12. Two cutting blades 7 are shown ; in an alternative form rotating roller cutters may be employed, and the blades or cutters may be heated or cooled if required. The apparatus may be used in an air-free gaseous atmosphere or arranged to depend into a liquid in order to allow chemical reactions to take place.
