Abstract

757,416. Polarizing apparatus. AMERICAN OPTICAL CO. Jan. 8, 1954, No. 636/54. Class 97 (1). On viewing a stereoscopic pair of lightpolarizing images A, B through polarizing analyzers C, D, the ghost of the image intended for one eye, which is visible to the other, is made invisible by adjusting the density of the background so that the ghosts blend with the background and become substantially indiscernible. Preferably, the images are viewed by polarized light and the density of the background is varied by inclining the axes of the analyzers towards or away from one another. The polarized light may be provided by a polarizing layer 21 which may be attached to the image layers 20. The polarizing axis of the layer 21 may be vertical in which case the axes of the analyzers C, D are each displaced, through the angle between the arrows into the position of the dotted arrow. If the polarizing axis of the layer 21 is horizontal, the analyzers C, D are rotated in the opposite sense. Instead of rotating the analyzers, the polarizing axes of the image portions A, B may be rotated relatively to the layer 21. The image portions A, B may be projected by plane polarized light on to a non-depolarizing screen and the projected image viewed as is the picture in Fig. 3. Specifications 556,578 and 562,877 are referred to.
