Abstract
757,384. Centrifugal separators. SCHUCHTERMANN & KREMER-BAUM AKT.-GES. FUR AUFBEREITUNG. Sept. 18, 1952 [Sept. 21, 1951; Jan. 21, 1952], No. 23424/52. Class 23. Solids entrained in a stream of transporting liquid are separated by passing the stream to the centre of a rotary field formed by a suspension having a specific gravity greater than that of the transporting liquid, the heavier solids passing through the field for collection and the lighter solids being carried along by the discharging stream of transporting liquid. Coal to be separated entrained in a stream of water is fed by a pipe 14 to the interior of a rotor 3, 4. The rotor is enclosed within a container 1 filled with suspension at such a pressure that the suspension extends a radial distance "a" into the rotor to form the field. The heavy components of the coal pass through the rotary field to collect in the bottom of the container, whilst the lighter components and the water flow through the annulus between the pipe 14 and the rotor shaft 9 to discharge at 13. Heavy components with some suspension are discharged from the container to a screen 17, the suspension passing through the screen being returned to the container by a pump 18. Additional suspension may be added to the suspension returned to the container to replace suspension which is gradually withdrawn with the discharging water and light components, or alternatively additional suspension may be supplied to the rotary field by a pipe 23. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the container and the rotor are of similar shape, the transport liquid enters the rotor at the top and leaves with the lighter components from the bottom, the suspension is supplied to the container by a tangential inlet, and suspension and the heavy components are discharged from the container 'by a tangential outlet.
