Abstract

756,783. Jet propulsion plant. SOLAR AIRCRAFT CO. May 3, 1954 [June 30, 1953], No. 12763/54. Class 110(3) [Also in Group XII] A variable area jet propulsion nozzle comprises inner and outer members defining the nozzle and, to vary the size of the nozzle, means for moving simultaneously the members in opposite axial directions so that the axial loads imposed on them by the exhaust gases are at least in part compensated. The tailpipe 20 of a jet propulsion engine comprises a diffuser 22 a reheat chamber 24 and a variable area nozzle. A tail cone 30 is arranged or located within the diffuser 22. Fuel is supplied to the reheat chamber through pipes 31, a distributer ring 32 and spray nozzles 34 circumferentially disposed adjacent a flame holder 36. The variable area nozzle comprises an outer nozzle section 27 slidable on packing 146 carried by a bracket 144 attached to the tailpipe section 26 and an inner nozzle section 46 which is slidably mounted in a tubular member 40 forming an extension of the tail cone 30. The inner and outer nozzle sections are connected by linkwork to the opposite ends of three pivoted levers 158. The lengths of the lever arms are chosen so that the effects of the gas pressure on the nozzle sections are balanced. Under these conditions, the operating force required is a minimum. If desired, the lengths of the lever arms may be so arranged that in the event of a control failure, the nozzle sections move to the position corresponding to the maximum or minimum areas. The inner nozzle section 46 is mounted on a tube 64 which is supported in the tube 40 by two sets of rollers 78 mounted in bulkheads 68. Cooling air from the compressor discharge is supplied through a pipe 122 to apertures 120 in the rear of a flange 116 attached to a sleeve 114 mounted in the tube 40. This cooling air passes between the sleeve 114 and tube 40 to the forward bulkhead 68 where it is diverted into the tube 64 through which it passes to atmosphere. Cooling air from the compressor discharge is also passed through fittings 142 axial channels 140 and peripheral channel 138 to spaces 130 formed between the surface of the struts 42 and an inner shell 128. This air passes through an annular space 112 formed between the tube 40 and an inner sleeve 106 to a space formed between the inner and outer surfaces of the inner nozzle member 46 from which it passes to atmosphere.
