Abstract
A copolymer of acrylonitrile and one or more other polymerizable compounds is heat-discoloured to such an extent that it is more permeable to infra-red light of a wavelength from 1000 to 3600 mm than to visible light, e.g. by heating the copolymer to above 140 DEG C. until the desired degree of discolouration is obtained. The copolymer may contain a dyestuff which has a greater permeability for infra-red light than for visible light, and which is introduced into the monomeric ingredients of the copolymer before copolymerization is effected. The copolymer may also contain various substances capable of intensifying the discolouration during heating, and which may be added to the copolymer before, during, or after polymerization. Substances mentioned are hydrochloric, phosphoric, sulphuric and trichloracetic acids and salts such as zinc chloride, iron chloride, aluminium chloride, alkalis such as alcoholic potash lye, hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, pyridine, and azodiisobutyronitrile. Specified other polymerizable compounds are methyl methacrylate, styrene, vinyl acetate, and vinylidene chloride. The copolymer in the form of plates may be used as filters permeable to infra-red light. Specification 727,827 is referred to.
