Abstract

The 6-keto group in codeinone and substituted codeinones is reduced to a secondary alcoholic group by means of an alkali metal borohydride (e.g. sodium or lithium). The process is preferably carried out in an inert diluent such as methanol, ethanol, ether, tetrahydrofuran or dimethylformamide. Examples show the production of codeine, 1-bromocodeine and 14-bromocodeine by reduction of the corresponding ketones with sodium borohydride. Codeine hydrobromide and 1-bromocodeine methiodide are prepared from the first two products.
