Abstract

A composition for desalting sea water comprises (a) a cation-exchanging silver-saturated resin; (b) a cation-exchanging hydrogen ion-saturated resin; and (c) barium hydroxide. Resin (a) is a sulphonated copolymer of a monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon such as styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl xylene or vinyl naphthalene, and a polyvinyl aromatic hydrocarbon such as divinyl or trivinyl-benzene, -toluene, -xylene or -naphthalene, preferably prepared in pearl form in aqueous suspension using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst and polyvinyl pyrrolidone as dispersing agent. Silver nitrate solution is passed repeatedly over the pearls until a 40 per cent silver nitrate content is obtained. Resin (b) may be any industrial type or as (a) but saturated with hydrogen ions. The composition is prepared by adding dry barium octahydroxide and animal charcoal to the cation-exchanging silver and hydrogen-ion saturated resins and homogenizing by dry mixing. Sea water may be desalted by contact with the composition in a plastic bag fitted with a cotton filter.ALSO:Sea-water is desalted by contact with a composition comprising (a) a cation-exchanging silver-saturated resin, (b) a cation-exchanging hydrogen-ion-saturated resin, and (c) barium hydroxide. Resin (a) is a sulphonated copolymer of a monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon such as styrene, vinyl-toluene, -xylene, or -naphthalene, and a polyvinyl-aromatic hydrocarbon such as a divinyl- or trivinyl-benzene, -toluene, -xylene or -naphthalene, preferably prepared in pearl form. Silver nitrate solution is passed repeatedly over the pearls until a 40 per cent silver nitrate content is obtained. Resin (b) may be any industrial type or as (a) but saturated with hydrogen ions. The composition is prepared by adding dry barium octahydroxide and animal charcoal to the cation-exchanging silver- and hydrogen-ion-saturated resins and homogenizing by dry mixing. The water may be desalted by contact with the composition in a plastic bag fitted with a cotton filter.
