756,322. Automatic exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 9, 1953 [Feb. 13, 1952], No. 3775/52. Class 40 (4). In a selector switch for connecting an inlet to one of a number of outlets in which the inlet and the outlets can each be in any of three electrical conditions the inlet and an outlet are automatically connected when both are changed from the first to the second condition and when connected change to the third condition to prevent further connections occurring. The switches may be multi-cathode gas tubes controlled by recurring series of pulses. In a group of preselectors G1 . . . GX, Fig. 8, the anodes are connected to subscribers lines X and the corresponding cathodes are multipled to outlets Y. Individual series of negative pulses P1 . . . Py, Fig. 9, are continuously applied to the outlets and a series of positive pulses Q1 . . . Qx is allotted to each subscriber's line. When a subscriber's line, say 1, is waiting to be connected, the corresponding pulse series Q1 is applied, and when coincidence occurs between a pulse Q1 and one of the pulses, say P1, applied to the outlets Y the corresponding gap fires and a maintaining current circuit is completed between the potentials +V and earth over rectifiers W2, W1 The change in potential of the connected circuits prevents the firing of another gap of the tube G1 or of the gaps corresponding to the seized outlet in the tubes G2 . . .
