Abstract
756,281. Filters. MURRAY, E. E. Sept. 8, 1954 [Sept. 8, 1953], No. 26004/54. Class 46. An apparatus for removing foreign material from liquid including a tank 3, a cylindrical member 6 having a perforate peripheral surface 19 and imperforate end members 7, 8 with aligned central openings 10, 11 therethrough, rollers 24, 25 mounting the member 6 with the lower peripheral portion thereof disposed within the tank 3 for rotation about an axis inclined to the horizontal, a trough 2 and channelled shoot 36 for conveying liquid carrying foreign material into the member 6, and a motor 31 with mechanical transmission to intermittently partially rotate the member 6, has a scraper 43 mounted within the member 6 and engaging the inner surface 19 to remove foreign material therefrom, and a discharge shoot 50 disposed within the member 6 under the scraper and extending outwardly thereof to remove said foreign material from said member. As the liquid carrying the foreign material drops on to the wire mesh surface 19 the solid materials are retained by the mesh and the liquid passes through. As the mesh becomes clogged, the liquid level inside the member 6 rises and lifts a float 40 which closes a switch to actuate the motor 31 so that the member 6- is rotated to present clean mesh to the liquid which flows therethrough, allowing the float 40 to drop and switch off the motor until the process is repeated. Foreign material clinging to the mesh 19 is carried upwards to the scraper. Clumps of the material too heavy to remain on the mesh gravitate to and are carried upwards by pick-up elements 54 mounted on the end member 8. In a modification the discharge shoot 50 is flexibly mounted and is vibrated by actuator members on the end member 7 engaging a cam on the shoot. The end members 7 and 8 are held in proper relationship to each other by braces 14 uniformly spaced about the periphery of the members. In another embodiment the mesh member 19 is shorter than the circumference of the member 6, the ends being connected together by bolts and an imperforate plate member which is curved to the curvature of the member 6, so that the mesh band may be readily removed for replacement and said plate may be readily removed to provide access to the interior of the member 6.
