Abstract

755,464. Vehicle wheels. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. May 17, 1954 [Nov. 20, 1953], No. 14364/54. Class 144 (2). A wheel construction comprises a disc 12 provided with a plurality of lugs 40 spaced uniformly about its circumference and formed with radially extending surfaces which engage corresponding radial surfaces on portions of removable clamp members 20, and a rim 11 having oppositely disposed angular surfaces 16 forming a circumferential rib 15 shaped to coact with complementary surfaces 29 on the ends of the clamp members 20, the latter being restrained against axial movement and adapted to be moved towards the rim by the movement of adjacent abutting members 21. As shown, the clamp or chucking-member 20 has a flat substantial radial surface which seats against a fixed, flat, radial surface of the lug 40 and terminates in an inclined lower cam surface 36 which abuts against a corresponding surface 31 on the angularly offset foot portion 35 of a wedge member 21. The latter has an upper end surface 32 inclined similarly to the lower surface 31 and arranged to bear against an adjacent surface 37 on the member 20 when a nut 47 is tightened upon a bolt 46 passing through the three members 40, 20, and 21. The bottom end of the wedge member 21 is seated upon the flat surface 50 of a projection 49 which is integral with the lug 40, so that the tightening of the nut serves to increase the outward radial pressure of the concave portions 23, 24 of the bifurcated ends of the members 20. To prevent turning of the rim 11 relative to the wheel, metal driving blocks or lugs 52 are riveted upon the underside of the rib 15 to engage between the pairs of projections 25, 27 and 26, 28, Fig. 4, comprising the bifurcated end of member 20. The axial position of the rim relative to the wheel may be altered by arranging the clamping means on the opposite side of the lug 40 and two further alternative positions are provided by rim 14 similar to rim 15. Fig. 7 shows an alternative form of clamp comprising a substantially U-shaped member 60 with a pair of spaced arms 61, 62 terminating in circumferentially spaced pairs of projections 64, 65 and 66, 67.
