A lock comprises bolt means withdrawable by rotation of a spindle, e.g. under control of a key-actuable lock movement and provided with snap-acting means, operable by a slight angular rotation of the spindle in a sense contrary to that in which the spindle withdraws the bolt means, adapted to effect dead-locking of the bolt-means. As shown, a latch bolt 5 is withdrawn, on one side of the lock, by a handle 7 having a pin-and-slot connection 8, 10 with the bolt tail 2, and on the other side of the lock by a spindle or the like of a key-operated lock mechanism, the spindle engaging a follower 12 having an arm 13 which engages the bolt tail 2. A lever 15 pivoted to the lock casing at 16 and loaded by a spring 19 is moved to the position shown, to dead-lock the bolt, by a cam portion 23 of follower 12, when the latter is moved by the lock mechanism in a direction opposite to that for withdrawing the bolt 5. The lever 15 is released by a member 24 pivoted to the lock case at 25 and connected to the lever 15 through a pin 20, as the follower 12 is moved in the direction to withdraw the bolt. The bolt may also be dead-locked from the other side of the lock, Fig. 3 (not shown), by a cylinder lock located in the handle 7 and operative upon a follower and lever system similar to that described above, the levers at both sides being joined together at the bolt end thereof and loaded by a single spring 19. An arcuate slot 30 on the bolt tail 2 aligns with a slot 9 in the casing to permit the bolt to be held temporarily in retracted position when pushed inwardly of the casing.
